Cheryl Kline earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Commercial Art from Woodbury University and studied figurative art at the Bruchion School of Realist Art in California and in summer sessions from 1998 through 2002 at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. She teaches classical art at her studio in Santa Monica, California.

SKIES

Cheryl Kline's skyscapes are derived from an entire lifetime of looking at nature but signify a recent evolution in the artist's visual direction. Kline began her successful career as a classical figurative painter. Five years ago, however, she felt the need for serious exploration beyond her primary genre, a common studio experience for a figurative painter. As a 20-year resident of Pacific Palisades, Kline has spent hours observing the dramatic sky events that transpire daily along the Pacific coast. The inspiration of her surroundings initially compelled Kline to daub a simple landscape of a view outside her window. Upon its completion she felt an unparalleled sense of peace and contentment. Soon after, she decided to honor the Millennium by creating a series of skyscapes: Kline rendered a new version of a single view near her home each week for an entire year. This project was the watershed in her experience as a fine artist, as she made the rapid transformation into a master landscape painter.

As Kline began to pay more attention to the sky, with a desire to paint what she saw over the ocean, she also came to understand that the mystery of nature’s beauty lies in its apparent, but deceptive repetition. As a result, she learned that each recurrence of an event could be entirely new, or different, if endowed by the viewer with a different emotion. As a result, in Kline’s work, a sunset is a statement of feeling and a landmark or memento of an emotional journey. Seeking this emotional content, while Kline’s views may sometimes be reminiscent of Church, she has looked more to the Luminists, such as Martin Johnson Heade, as her inspiration.

Another contribution to the special character of Kline’s work in a traditional genre is her palette, in which she has mastered subtle harmonies between grays, blues, reds, oranges and yellows. In recent years, Kline has spent each summer at the Florence Academy of Art, exploring the Florentine palette of color in painting, which is limited to 10 traditional colors (including Ultramarine blue, Naples yellow and English red). In addition to sensing at times a Fra Angelico buoyancy in Kline’s palette, Kline’s study in Florence appears to have brought a higher idealism and even romantic aura to her work, embodied in more layering of glazes, and a deeper, richer texture.

ARTIST'S SENTIMENT

Ahh...today you surprised me,
you hid your smile until midday
when you flooded my room
like a symphony of fire
leaving me flushed and aglow.
And yesterday evening your mood of passion
exploded with a vermilion embrace,
a reminder of the paradise I seek,
wondering and wanting tomorrow,
for you to tease me more with your
soft cloud whispers on a bed of ultramarine.
Your infinite power is my addiction.
I am in love with you...the sky.
